Located in the heart of Monroe County, Bloomington Indiana is the 'heart
of the heart' of our nation. To the north of us (approximately 50 miles), you
will find Indianapolis, the capital of Indiana. There you can enjoy 'Big City'
life at it's finest. Museums, Restaurants, Shopping and Recreation that
rivals any ion in the country may be found there. To the south of us are
towns such as Cincinnati Ohio and Louisville Kentucky, all ed within a
couple of hours of Bloomington.
Bloomington is by far the most beautiful and diverse of all Indiana towns
(urban communities). The town began as a small university town shared
by a limestone mining operation (we call them quarries). There is a rumor
that several educators (mostly artists and musicians) from the east coast
traveled west until they came upon an area beautiful enough for them to
begin their own school. We are famous for our quality limestone. In fact,
several of the nation's most recognized buildings (the Empire State
Building being just one example of this) got their stone from right here in
Bloomington!
Indiana University is ed in Bloomington. At I.U. you find a world class
Music, Art, Law, Business and Sports curriculum, all ed on one of the
most beautiful campuses in the world.
Lake Monroe, with access less than 10 miles south of downtown
Bloomington, is the largest man made lake in the state, and one of the
largest lakes in the entire mid-west. Lake Monroe offers great fishing and
is also a wonderful place to launch your motor or sailboat. There are
several public beaches on Lake Monroe. It is a true 'jewel' of our county.
We also enjoy smaller lakes in Monroe County. Lake Griffy is located on
the north side of Bloomington and Lake Lemon is located on the far
northeast end of our county. The White River flows to the west of us and
several smaller rivers and creeks criss-cross our terrain.
The locals enjoy a rich cultural atmosphere. You can find restaurants
representing all parts of the world here, as well as good old 'down home
cookin.' If entertainment is what you crave, you can attend one of our many
festivals or enjoy an evening out at one of our nightclubs, or museums. You
can also enjoy programs produced either by the university, or one of our
local theatre groups. Our farmer's market is both beautiful and
entertaining. Local musicians serenade shoppers as they search the many
booths for the season's most delectable items. Everything from honey
harvested by local bee keepers, flowers and vegetables from proud farmer's
gardens, to Amish made bakery products can be found here on Saturday
mornings at the newly refurbished 'Shower's Building' plaza.
The Bloomington Hospital enjoys a reputation as one of the finest in the
state of Indiana. Physicians specializing in virtually every field of medicine
make Bloomington their home.
The education of our children is a high priority to the residents of
Bloomington. Constant monitoring and up-grading of children's
educational needs, both scholastically and physically, allow our children to
be considered 'a step above the crowd' when moving on to their higher
education requirements.
Shopping is a favorite pass time for Bloomington residents. The 'College
Mall' offers shoppers a variety of products and suppliers to choose from.
Just to the east of us is 'world famous' Brown County. The little village of
Nashville is the center of Brown County life. There, local artists display
their crafts and talents to an ever-increasing amount of tourist traffic each
year.
Springtime brings a brilliant cover of flowering trees, plants and shrubs to
Bloomington and Monroe County. Bloomington is blanketed with many
varieties of 'blooms' (...hence the name 'Bloom'ington). In the summertime,
we are surrounded by 'plush green.' Not too hot or too cold, we have
nearly a perfect place to live for those who like a little snow in the winter,
yet appreciate a genuine spring and summer. Because of our abundance of
hardwood trees, the autumn supplies the locals (as well as the tourists who
make special road trips just for the view) with a spectacular display of
color.
Whether you desire the atmosphere of the inner city or enjoy the quiet
solitude of nature, you can find exactly what you want in Bloomington,
Indiana.
